Valentine’s Day is incredibly special for most of us and it is a time when we make a greater effort to buy our loved ones cards and flowers to show them just how much we care. But what is the meaning behind the day and why is it celebrated all over the world? The truth is nobody really knows how it truly got started.
According to legend, it all dates back to the Christian and Roman traditions. Some say that it is derived from an ancient Roman festival of love and fertility, which used to take place on February 15th. But the pagan festival was later taken over by Christianity and in 496, it was renamed Saint Valentine’s Day by Pope Gelasius. Others believe that it can be traced back to one of the three Christian martyrs who were given the title of Saint Valentine’s after being killed for their religion. One of them was a bishop in Terni, another was a priest in Rome. Very little is known about the third man, except that he purportedly died in Africa. Intriguingly, they were all said to have been martyred on February 14th, although it has never officially been confirmed.
But whatever gave rise to the celebrations, one thing is for certain Valentine’s Day takes on a more significant meaning when our nearest and dearest go to great lengths to make us feel special. So if you want to make someone’s day, then give them some flowers to show them just how much you cherish them.
But what should I buy?
